AsSalaamu Alaykum,
Regarding the approval to travel, I read something about it on hijra.net that one has to write a brief letter of intent, get it notarized and county clerk’d and the regular process. When I went to the county clerk, they never heard of that and did not do it, and so I e-mailed our congressman and got this response…
“Your email to Congressman LaHood was referred to me because I handle State Department matters for him. The State Department says approval from your country to travel does not exist. The US government does not provide travel to Americans since it is an inherent right. Their suggestion was for you to tell them that being issued a passport is implicit acknowledgement of the permission they are seeking.”
If anyone knows anything other than this, please inform us, jazakAllahkhair,

Brother Abdul Haqq,
They tell the students who try to get this letter the same thing every year. This is a new rule introduced in the past 5 years.
We apologize for not answering your questions on time, we are all involved in summer activities and what not.
I am working on contacting the 2 brothers who are charged with sending everyone the info-packs insha Allah.
May Allah bless you all.

Wa Alaikum Salam Sr. Kathy,
Most likely the brother is a revert. However, this should not come as a surprise since dozens of reverts have studied at the university before and are doing so now.

asslamu alaikum
i hope this letter finds you in good health. I have a question. Would you recommend a student of knowledge to enter into the college of shariah or hadeeth, and why? i know that all the 5 colleges contain great benefit but distinguishing between the two, which do you think is more beneficial, espicially in this country.[usa]
